Annotation & Evidence #1

OBJECTIVE #1: Understand how the auditory and vestibular systems correlate with hearing and balance examination

 ACTIVITIES/RESOURCES:

  • Shadow supervisor during a patients VNG testing
  • Review multiple report samples to have a better understanding on how it works
  • Review background information received from supervisor

 EVIDENCE:

Create pamphlet describing the relationship between auditory and vestibular nerves in relation to hearing and balance, along with the examples of the techniques used for VNG testing.

 Vestibular System Brochure

The following brochure link listed below is a breif description of the vestibular system and how the VNG testing works. The brochure is displayed in a way to grab someones attention who suffers from any type of dizziness or unusual balance. The evidence explains the difference between the auditory and vestibular system and listed in the evidence contains the different types of testing techniques used for VNG testing. It is connected to my course work because the auditory system concentrates on the sense of hearing while the vestibular system concentrates more on the sense of balance and equilibrium. I learned how to read the reports  after the testings and I got the chance to fill out paper work too. Once the testings were completed I was also taught how to clean the equipment to avoid germs. In the field of audiology it is important to understand both of these systems because it helps us aid the patient in ways where we can supply the help that is needed.

Throughout my internship I observed my supervisor while she performed different types of VNG testings; the caloric test, positional test, and the tracking test.  Each test performed, uses different techniques;  examples include visual displays, hot and cold air pressure, and laying the body in different positions. I was able to learn the difference between the tests and how they affect the vestibular and auditory system during examination to determine whether or not dizziness could be due to inner ear disease.
