Summary of Experience
As an intern at Rhode Island Ear, Nose & Throat Physicians, Inc. I gained an incredible experience as I stepped foot into the field of audiology. I had the oppurtunity to use skills I gained from my previous coursework with the skills I learned from my supervisor.
Interning with a practice that relies on nothing but patient care, I was very interested in seeing the before and aftermath of working with patients who all suffered from a hearing loss. My ultimate goal was to learn the understandings of an audiogram and the difference between bone conduction and air conduction. In order to perform those objectives, I shadowed and observed my supervisor and conducted an informational interview with an Audiologist in New York. I observed and assisted with hearing aid fittings, watched techniques for conducting impressions, and asked about the different levels and degrees of hearing loss. I reviewed the course work given to me from my supervisor and made my own brochure and a key to break down the components of an audiogram. Throughout this internship I have learned that it is impossible to learn every little thing that I wish to know. However, that is my ultimate goal for anything towards which I work hard. I look forward to using the skills I have gained with my future skills-to- be, to eventually persue my dream career of becoming an audiologist.
Rhode Island Ear Nose, and Throat Physicians, Inc. is a well known practice which has been around for 50 years managed by eight physicians. They concentrate on all different aspects in the otologic field. One of my objectives in the internship was to understand how the auditory and vestibular systems correlate with hearing and balance examination. I observed my supervisor during VNG testing and reviewed multiple report samples to gain a better understanding on how it works. I was able to better understand the testings with the course work I received from my supervisor. Overall, I wanted to be knowledgeable about how VNG testing worked and prepare myself for future studies in the audiology program.
This Internship has influenced my future goals because I wasn't just sitting in a classroom studying from books, I was able to learn about the actual workplace amongst the field of audiology. I gained the hands on experience I wished for working with patients and hearing aids. I wish to use this experience as a guide line through graduate school and for a future job in the field.
